Overview

The Surgical First Assist provides direct support to the surgeon during surgical procedures. This role involves assisting in surgery, performing specific tasks under the surgeon's direction, and ensuring that the surgical environment is safe, sterile, and well-prepared. The Surgical First Assist is integral to the successful outcome of surgical procedures and is expected to work efficiently and effectively within a high-pressure environment.

Responsibilities

Intraoperative Surgical Assistance

  • Provide first-assist support during surgical procedures under the direction of the operating surgeon.
  • Assist with exposure, visualization, and access to the operative site through appropriate tissue handling and retraction.
  • Control bleeding through clamping, cauterization, ligation, and other hemostatic techniques.
  • Perform wound closure, including suturing, stapling, and dressing application, as permitted by scope of practice.
  • Handle, prepare, and utilize surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment appropriately.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and maintain efficient surgical workflow throughout procedures.

Preoperative Responsibilities

  • Review patient records, surgical schedules, and procedure requirements.
  • Ensure availability and readiness of required instruments, equipment, implants, and supplies.
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and establishment of a sterile field.
  • Verify compliance with patient identification and surgical safety protocols.

Postoperative Responsibilities

  • Assist with application of dressings, drains, and immobilization devices.
  • Participate in patient transfer and postoperative care activities.
  • Document surgical assistance provided according to organizational policies.
  • Facilitate turnover and preparation of the operating room for subsequent procedures.

Quality and Safety

  • Maintain strict adherence to aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
  • Promote patient safety and quality outcomes throughout the perioperative process.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and adverse events as appropriate.
  • Participate in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical First Assist Program that includes a didactic and at least 140 documented procedures
  • Minimum of 3-5 years as a Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
  • Strong understanding of surgical anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and focus during high-stress situations.
Credentials
  • NBSTSA Certification (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
  • CSFA Certification (Certified Surgical First Assistant)
  • BLS – Basic Life Saving Certification
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in related field (Nursing, Surg Tech) preferred
