The Certified Grader grades lumber in accordance with WWPA standards and customer expectations. This role involves inspecting and evaluating wood products for quality and assists in the training of non-certified graders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESResponsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Comprehend and perform all duties in accordance with rules, regulations and JSAs.
- Follow safety protocols and report hazards to ensure a safe work environment.
- Conduct thorough inspections of lumber, assessing quality, size, and defects according to WWPA grading rules and customer expectations.
- Work with WWPA inspectors to ensure that all graded lumber meets the required quality standards for marketability.
- Coordinate with the set‑up personnel and Planer Feederman on quality issues.
- Notify Head Grader or Dry End Quality Manager of moisture content or quality issues identified.
- Maintain a production level work pace.
- Duties vary by mill.
- Valid Lumber Grader Certification.
- 1+ year(s) of experience in lumber manufacturing.
- Skills:
- Must know species, lumber grades, length and width.
- Ability to read a tape measure, calipers, and moisture meter.
- Ability to read and understand printed materials.
- Ability to pass a hair follicle drug test, post‑offer pre‑employment physical, and background check.
- Valid driver’s license
- High school diploma or GED.
- Production
Ability to sit and/or stand for shift, reach with hands and arms, stoop, squat, bend at the waist, kneel, walk varying distance, and climb stairs.
- Bend at waist – frequent
- Twist upper body – frequent
- Lift above waist height – frequent depending on machine center
- Repetitive use of hands – constant
- Stand/walk – constant
- Vision – near and far correctable; depth perception
- Hearing – preferred for awareness of surrounding machinery, mobile equipment, emergencies
Must be able to tolerate all weather elements, loud conditions, airborne particles (sawdust).
