Job Summary
State of Maine Department of Health and Human Services – Public Health Nurse II (Class 4055, Grade 07-22). Salary $64,064.00 – $87,318.40 per year inclusive of a 15% recruitment and retention stipend.
Location:
Lewiston, Maine. Position number . Partial telework available with management approval. Not eligible for visa sponsorship or STEM OPT extensions.
- Provide direct nursing services to individuals and families in an assigned geographic and programmatic area.
- Conduct care planning and management, home and field visits, clinics and conferences.
- Advise and assist civic groups on nursing and public health needs.
- Perform senior‑level administrative functions such as training orientation, precepting, staff meetings, caseload reviews, attending and representing supervisor at meetings and conferences.
- Be available to other unit staff when supervisor is unavailable.
- Apply nursing process: health assessment, care plan development, implementation and evaluation, resource coordination, referral.
- Coordinate client care with hospitals, medical providers, schools, and social services agencies.
- Assess need for health care clinics; organize and coordinate physicians, volunteers, providers, families, and community agencies.
- Observe family environment, identify health problems or at‑risk behavior, and contact appropriate resources and agencies.
- Teach prevention and control measures of communicable and non‑communicable diseases.
- Act as team coordinator with health professionals, social workers, community agencies and volunteers.
- Plan and implement comprehensive orientation and training of new Public Health Nurses and act as preceptor for nursing/medical students.
- Assist supervisor in planning, organizing, and coordinating staff meetings; assist other nursing staff.
- Conduct caseload and record reviews of Public Health Nurses according to established procedures.
- Attend meetings and conferences and fill in for supervisors.
- Collect data and prepare records, reports and statistical information for immunization and disease control programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or graduation from an accredited school of Nursing and at least 2 years of professional nursing experience.
- Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the State Board of Nursing.
- Knowledge of public health programs, nursing principles, and nursing process.
- Knowledge of consultative techniques used in public health nursing.
- Ability to organize and conduct clinics, conferences and school health programs.
- Ability to plan and implement comprehensive orientation and training programs.
- Paid holidays: 13 days per year.
- Sick leave: 12 days per year.
- Vacation leave: 3+ weeks per year, with accrual increasing with years of service.
- Health insurance coverage at 85–100% of employee‑only premiums (12–15k annual value).
- Dental insurance coverage 100% of employee‑only premiums (~$400).
- Maine Public Employees Retirement System contribution 14.11% of employee's pay.
- Parental leave: six weeks fully paid; additional unpaid leave may be available under FMLA.
