PURPOSEThe GIS Assistant will work with Nez Perce National Historical Park, Big Hole National Battlefield, and Whitman Mission National Historic Site to organize, verify, and integrate existing natural resources data sets into the program’s GIS. The role includes identifying gaps in data, creating SOPs to improve data collection quality, and developing tools in Python or R to support analysis, reporting, and future monitoring.
DESCRIPTIONOF DUTIES
- Recover and organize existing natural resource data sets from the tri‑park group.
- Summarize and analyze data to support project reports and scientific communication.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) to standardize data collection methods.
- Integrate datasets into the program GIS and create R scripts for future data workflows.
- Use Field Maps/Survey 123 to develop GIS resources and assist with field monitoring.
- Move data into Geoportal/AGOL as appropriate.
- Participate in monitoring activities to refine SOPs and field workflows.
- Organized, summarized natural resource data ready for future analysis.
- GIS layers and maps based on existing data sets.
- Contributions to NEPE, WHMI, and BIHO Local Resource Unit Guides.
- Python or R code for visualization, statistical analysis, and data quality improvement.
- SOP documentation for ongoing data management.
- Science education product (e.g., story map, presentation) highlighting completed work.
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
- High school diploma or equivalency; if not yet earned, must obtain it before receiving the education award.
- Agree to provide eligibility information and complete required background checks.
- Available for full 26‑week term.
- Experience using R for data science projects.
- Strong basic statistical analysis skills.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
- Advanced R usage (e.g., package functions, nested data frames).
- Experience with linear mixed‑effects models and bootstrapping.
- Experience collecting and summarizing vegetation or other natural resources data.
The duty station is located in Spalding, Idaho on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation, approximately 15 miles from Lewiston, / Clarkston, WA. The applicant must arrange for personal housing and transportation. A valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle are required.
TIME REQUIREMENTS- Full‑time service each week; exact schedule may vary.
- Possible participation in national, state, or local service projects.
- Lunch breaks and days off are exempt from Ameri Corps hours.
- Receive project and site training throughout the term.
- Ameri Corps orientation covering prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Access to free professional development webinars.
Performance is evaluated on completion of required Ameri Corps hours, assignment fulfillment, and other criteria communicated at the start of service. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets, monthly accomplishment tracking, a mid‑term report, and a final report.
