Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Wastewater Collection Maintenance Supervisor and or Lead, evaluate, maintain and repair wastewater collection, distribution and treatment systems and related facilities and equipment, including lift stations and pumps.
Essential Functions:
Evaluate, maintain and repair wastewater collection, distribution and treatment systems and related facilities and equipment, including lift station, wet wells and pumps; assist with maintenance of collection and distribution infrastructure.
Maintain and repair pumping equipment, including automatic control valves and related control systems; maintain, repair and clean pipe lines.
Operate jet-vacuum truck and high pressure hoses to clean line and manholes and to open stoppages; remove grease and debris from manholes.
Operate mechanical power rodder and other equipment in order to clean plugged sewer lines and remove obstructions from wastewater drainage systems.
Inspect and determine proper operating levels of sewer lines through the operation and use of closed circuit television cameras and equipment.
Excavate, repair or replace valves, lift station lines and sewer lines.
Locate sewer lines for contractors and utilities; raise manholes covered by street overlay projects; respond to emergency call-out as necessary.
Operate a variety of related equipment, including a jet truck, closed-circuit television vehicle and equipment, backhoe, dump truck, power and hand rodder, jackhammer and a variety of hand and power tools.
Operate and maintain City maintained lift stations; perform preventive maintenance and clean wet wells.
Assist water and street department personnel with repairs and maintenance of water line breaks and cleaning storm drains as assigned.
Maintain records related to lift stations and collection system maintenance and repair activities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities:
Collection and distribution systems maintenance and repair.
Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of wastewater systems.
Lift station operation and maintenance.
Health and safety regulations.
Proper lifting techniques.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Technical aspects of the wastewater maintenance trade.
Evaluate, maintain and repair wastewater collection, distribution and treatment systems and related facilities and equipment.
Maintain lift station pumping equipment.
Work cooperatively with others.
Operate a variety of specialized and related vehicles and equipment.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of actions.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Perform heavy physical labor.
Maintain routine records.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess, or obtain within 6 months of employment, valid commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements; must possess, or obtain within 18 months of employment, valid Idaho Class I Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification.
Working Conditions:
City sewers, lift stations, and wastewater treatment plant; outdoor work environment, subject to seasonal heat and cold and extreme weather conditions. Physical activities include hand and finger dexterity to operate vehicles, equipment and tools, driving a vehicle to conduct work, lifting (15-80 pounds), walking over rough or uneven surfaces, seeing to observe collection system condition and perform repairs, climbing, sitting, and standing.
Incumbents are exposed to fumes and hazardous and explosive gases, infectious conditions, traffic hazards, working in cramped or restrictive work chambers, high voltage and angry or abusive individuals.
