Lifeguard​/Water Safety Instructor

Responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, coordinating, controlling and supervising all aspects of swim lessons. Responsible for safety of all pool users.

Under the authority of the Recreation Coordinator, the specific functions include but are not limited to:

In addition to lifeguarding duties the Water Safety Instructor will do the following:

• Responsible for assisting the Assistant Pool Manager with the swim lesson program.
• Instructors will report at least 15 minutes prior to first class and be prepared with a lesson plan before they step on deck.
• When weather permits, make sure students get a minimum of half of the class time in the water.
• Instructors must be in the water with the participants.
• If participant refuses to get into the water or become chilled, allow them to get their towel and observe the class from the deck.
• Instructors will report to the Assistant Manager when materials are needed or equipment is out of order.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• 16 years of age or older.
• Certificate of lifeguard training.
• Certificate of Water Safety Instructor.
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• AED certification preferred.
• Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
• Available to work shifts.
• Physically fit, strong, agile and dexterous.

• Oral and written communication skills.
• Basic health and safety practices.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• Ability to learn proper methods of teaching swim lessons.

• Work independently with little direction or as a member of a crew.
• Understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Subject to outdoor environments: seasonal heat, temperature changes and extreme weather conditions.
• Physical demands include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time.

Please note, Non-Seasonal Part Time positions working 20-29 hours per week are eligible for PERSI Retirement and pro-rated Sick Leave and Vacation Accrual. Seasonal and Non-Seasonal Part Time jobs working less than 20 hours per week are not benefit eligible.
