This is an on‑call/relief position with a limited recurring schedule. The driver will cover open shifts or routes during transit operating hours:
Monday‑Friday 5:15 am‑7:30 pm, Saturday 8:15 am‑3:30 pm.
The position pays within the range $17.11 – $24.89 per hour, based on experience and qualifications. This role is open until filled.
Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Transit Driver is responsible for safely operating a transit vehicle. The primary objective is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation. The applicant must have prior driving experience, a neat appearance, be courteous, timely, dependable, and work well with the public.
Essential Functions- Operates a transit vehicle in a safe manner on a designated route and/or schedule, safely picking up and discharging passengers and operating vehicle onboard systems.
- Possesses functional knowledge of the service area and transit system. Communicates effectively in person and through two‑way radio in a professional manner. Maintains good rapport with passengers, the public, and city staff; provides friendly customer service, greets customers pleasantly; gives information concerning routes, fares, schedules and transfers.
- Collects and counts fares; collects data such as passenger surveys, trip completion reports and safety reports involving observed accidents, hazards or other circumstances requiring attention of the dispatcher or supervisory personnel.
- Performs pre‑trip vehicle inspections, checking fluids, tires, lights, instrumentation, brakes and other equipment, documenting any observed damage or defect information.
- Attends training and/or informational meetings.
- Maintains cleanliness of the assigned transit vehicle.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with city policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Five years minimum experience with safe operation of passenger cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.
- Safe driving history for a minimum of three years with no convictions of reckless driving or driving under the influence in the past ten years.
- Valid Commercial Driver License (Idaho Class C or out‑of‑state equivalent) with either P (Passenger) or S (School Bus) endorsement; proof of current DOT Medical Examination, or ability to obtain the above in Idaho within the first six months of hire.
- Ability to pass a drug screen, driving record and background check upon offer of employment.
- Experience working with elderly and disabled populations preferred.
- Ability to operate transit vehicles safely, including in heavy traffic and during adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and some weekends.
- Strong commitment to customer service with communication skills to explain policies and procedures simply and calmly.
- Ability to maintain a good working relationship with supervisors, co‑workers and the public; professional demeanor and sensitivity to diverse clientele.
- Ability to multi‑task handle emergency situations confidently, maintain a calm demeanor when communicating by telephone and two‑way radio, and operate in accordance with current policies and operational procedures of the Transit Division.
- Ability to operate an electronic mobile data terminal to track ridership, fares and route navigation.
- Ability to operate a passenger lift and safely secure mobility devices using a four‑point restraint system.
- Ready to report to work on time and in proper uniform.
- Maintain required credentials and certifications.
- Subject to DOT random drug & alcohol testing throughout the term of employment.
The employee will primarily work inside a transit bus or an outdoor environment, subject to various weather conditions, noise, dust and odors. Physical activities include bending at the waist, crouching, climbing and walking over uneven surfaces, occasionally lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds. While driving, the employee may sit in the driver's seat for long periods, use full range of hearing and vision, assist passengers, use two‑way radio, and push/pull wheelchairs over short distances.
Physical ability to stand, walk and assist passengers during inspections and maintenance is required.
