Overview

The Department of French and Francophone Studies at Bates College invites applications for a full‑time, two‑year visiting assistant professor position to begin July 2026.

Teaching Responsibilities
  • Teach five courses annually:
    French language at all levels, Francophone literature, cinema, culture courses, and a specialty seminar.
  • Possibly teach a cross‑listed English course in Environmental Studies.
  • Engage students in critical inquiry on gender, race, migration, colonialism, postcoloniality, urbanization, ecocriticism, and related topics.
Research & Scholarship
  • Demonstrate excellence in Francophone literature, film, and culture, especially from Sub‑Saharan Africa;
    Caribbean or North America experience is welcome.
  • Combine at least two of environmental humanities, ecopoetics, urbanization, immigration, or afrofuturism with Francophone studies.
  • Produce scholarly work supporting community‑engaged learning and inclusive pedagogy.

  • PhD in French or Francophone Studies by appointment.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship in a liberal arts context.
  • Evidence of innovative, inclusive, rigorous pedagogy.
