Overview
The UNE Portland Student Academic Success Center is a small, collaborative team dedicated to helping students thrive through tutoring. We serve a diverse mix of undergraduate and graduate learners, and our staff and peer educators work closely together in a supportive, student‑centered environment where creativity and new ideas are encouraged. It’s an exciting time to join us as we expand our services, strengthen partnerships with faculty, and develop new initiatives to better support students in rigorous health professions programs.
Professional tutors for graduate Public Health facilitate student learning by helping to clarify specific course content and promoting/modeling the use of appropriate study strategies. Supported courses include Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and other graduate public health courses.
This is a part‑time, temporary opportunity with an anticipated commitment of approximately 4 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible based on candidate availability. The position has an anticipated pay of $24.00 per hour.
Responsibilities- Use active learning techniques and good listening and facilitation skills; model study strategies that can be used successfully in the specific content area.
- Consult with the supervisor and course professors for advice, guidance, and direction in tutoring work.
- Maintain academic integrity and honesty at all times in work with tutees.
- Work cooperatively with SASC staff members to deliver a cohesive program and to respond in a professional manner to diverse student needs.
- Maintain regularly scheduled hours and meet with students by appointment.
- Participate in tutoring training sessions and staff meetings, as requested.
- Respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding the dispersal of information.
- Act as a representative for the tutoring program within the campus community.
- Maintain detailed records of sessions with students and logs to document activities.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Health or higher in a relevant subject area and a grade of at least B in the course at UNE or an equivalent course at another institution of higher education.
- Supportive recommendations from two faculty members or practitioners regarding the level of content knowledge in the subject area(s) to be tutored.
- Strong oral communication skills and strong evidence of professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching/tutoring experience, particularly in post‑secondary courses, or other relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to work successfully with clients.
- Knowledge and comfortable usage of online web‑conferencing platforms such as Skype, Zoom, Go To Meeting for communication with students and staff as needed.
