Medical Science Instructor
The Medical Science Instructor at Lewiston Regional Technical Center (LRTC) plays a vital role in preparing students for success in healthcare and medical careers by teaching a career-focused curriculum aligned with the National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE) standards, Maine Learning Results, and current industry practices. The instructor provides students with rigorous classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences while fostering the technical knowledge, professionalism, ethical decision-making, communication skills, and workplace readiness necessary for success in postsecondary education and the healthcare workforce.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Holds or is eligible to obtain a valid Maine Department of Education Career and Technical Education teaching endorsement (#910 Health Occupations, #896 Emergency Medical Services, or #919 Nursing Services).
- Teaches industry-aligned Medical Science curriculum and prepares lesson plans consistent with National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE) standards, Maine Learning Results, and local program requirements.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Plans and implements a comprehensive program of study that addresses the individual needs, interests, abilities, and career aspirations of students.
- Creates a safe, organized, engaging classroom and laboratory environment that promotes learning and reflects current healthcare industry expectations.
- Provides instruction in healthcare systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, infection control, patient assessment, legal and ethical responsibilities, emergency care, professionalism, and clinical skills.
- Delivers hands-on laboratory instruction and simulation-based learning utilizing current healthcare equipment, technologies, and instructional best practices.
- Prepares students to successfully earn nationally recognized industry credentials, including OSHA 10 for Healthcare, American Heart Association CPR/AED/First Aid, Stop the Bleed, Mandatory Reporter Training, and other approved certifications.
- Develops, coordinates, and maintains partnerships with hospitals, healthcare providers, long-term care facilities, emergency medical services, public health agencies, postsecondary institutions, and community organizations to support clinical observations, job shadows, guest speakers, and Extended Learning Opportunities.
- Encourages students to demonstrate professionalism, leadership, ethical decision-making, teamwork, effective communication, compassion, and patient-centered care consistent with healthcare industry expectations.
- Guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear instructional objectives for lessons, laboratories, simulations, clinical activities, and student projects.
- Integrates academic content, including biology, anatomy and physiology, mathematics, technical writing, communication, and health science into career and technical instruction.
- Maintains a safe instructional environment by implementing OSHA standards, infection control procedures, laboratory safety protocols, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
- Assesses student learning using a variety of formative and summative assessments, performance evaluations, certification assessments, and industry-based competencies.
- Maintains accurate electronic records, including attendance, grades, certification records, clinical documentation, work-based learning records, and student progress reports.
- Utilizes educational technology to enhance instruction, communication, assessment, and program management.
- Participates in curriculum development, program evaluation, accreditation activities, advisory committee meetings, SkillsUSA activities, work-based learning initiatives, student recruitment, and continuous program improvement.
- Collaborates with academic instructors, special education staff, multilingual learner staff, school counselors, administrators, and healthcare partners to support student success.
- Maintains current knowledge of healthcare practices, certifications, instructional methodologies, emerging technologies, and workforce trends through ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrates professionalism and serves as a positive role model for students in appearance, communication, ethics, and workplace expectations.
- Performs other related teaching and program responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing, Allied Health, Health Sciences, Emergency Medical Services, Public Health, or a closely related healthcare field preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of full-time occupational experience directly related to healthcare, nursing, emergency medical services, allied health, or a closely related medical profession preferred.
