Substation Operator
Spark Power, a trusted partner in energy in North America, is looking for a Substation Operator to join our project in the Bangor, Maine area.
The Substation Operator will be responsible for conducting field-based switching operations, isolating transformers, assessing relay trips, performing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting equipment, and coordinating substation re-energization efforts in collaboration with the ROC.
Here's what you'll do as a Substation Operator:
- Perform Substation Switching & Isolation:
Execute safe and controlled switching operations, isolating and energizing transformers, circuit breakers, and other high-voltage equipment following approved procedures. - Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) & Safety Compliance:
Implement and enforce LOTO procedures to ensure personnel safety during maintenance and repair operations. - Relay Trip Assessments & Fault Analysis:
Investigate relay trips, determine the cause of faults, and work with system operators and relay technicians to resolve issues efficiently. - Troubleshooting & Equipment Maintenance:
Conduct basic troubleshooting of substation components, including breakers, transformers, relays, and control systems. - Substation Re-energization Support:
Coordinate with remote operators and field crews to safely restore power after maintenance or fault conditions. - Monitoring & Inspection:
Perform routine inspections and monitoring of substation equipment, ensuring operational readiness and identifying potential risks. - Emergency Response & Outage Restoration:
Respond to unplanned outages, execute corrective actions, and assist in restoring power safely and efficiently. - Collaboration with Remote Teams:
Work closely with the ROC, SCADA operators, engineers, and maintenance personnel to ensure system reliability and safe operations. - Client Interaction:
Maintain professional relationships with clients at the field level and address concerns or escalations as needed. - Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of switching operations, relay events, equipment conditions, and maintenance activities.

Do you have the Spark? Here's what we're looking for:
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in electrical or mechanical fields preferred. - Experience:
3+ years of experience working in substation operations, electrical maintenance, or power distribution. - Certifications:
Technical certification in electrical systems or power distribution preferred - Licenses:
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. - Leadership – Ability to manage and support field teams, providing clear direction and mentorship.
- Ability to Read Schematics & Diagrams:
Capability to interpret single-line diagrams, control schematics, and relay settings. - Problem Solving – Capacity to assess challenges in real time and implement effective solutions.
- LOTO & Switching Procedures:
Proficiency in implementing Lockout/Tagout procedures and performing substation switching operations safely. - Technical Knowledge – Understanding of high-voltage electrical systems, substation components, protective relays, and electrical safety standards (e.g., NFPA 70E, NERC, OSHA)
- Attention to Detail – Ensuring accuracy in reporting, documentation, and compliance adherence
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 34kg (75lb)
- Work may take place on ladders, platforms, and cramped spaces with constant standing and kneeling. Proper ergonomics as well as hand and body dexterity must be applied when working under these conditions
