This is general duty police work performed in the field and at the station.

As part of a modern police department engaged in a comprehensive program of police service, an employee of this class assigned to patrol duty is responsible for the protection of life and property, for the prevention of crime, and for maintaining law and order. Work involves constant and varied contact with the public and requires the exercise of individual initiative. Assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures;

however, employees must be able to react with considerable discretion, dispatch, and authority in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports and observations of results obtained.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Patrols the community by cruiser and on foot; enforces traffic laws and issues citations or warning to violators; patrols high-activity areas, investigates traffic accidents, gives first aid to the injured, and prepares reports.

Watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons and property; checks cars and persons engaged in suspicious activity; answers and investigates citizens’ complaints and reports; investigates and participates in investigations of robberies, burglaries, family disturbances, assaults, and other complaints and incidents.

Checks doors and windows of business establishments and, as assigned, private homes; gives information to motorists concerning the location of streets, routes and buildings; answers miscellaneous service calls for citizens.

Escorts prisoners to police station and county jail; books charges including fingerprinting as needed and interrogation of prisoners; testifies and presents evidence in court.

Confers with parents, school officials, and court and other agencies regarding juvenile cases; assists in developing solutions and providing follow-up.

Receives by telephone or in person or by radio, reports, complaints, and inquiries of conditions requiring police attention; ascertains nature of inquiry.

Maintains police records and statistics, checks records for accuracy and completeness.

Works with the public in regards to crime prevention and establishing good public relations.

Performs work as required.

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Knowledge of principles and practices of modern police work (including radio and radar).

Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances.

Knowledge of first aid methods.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear and comprehensive written reports.

Ability to remember names, faces and details.

Ability to deal with the public courteously and firmly and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and associates.

Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.

Ability to develop skills in the use and care of firearms and other department equipment.

Good physical strength and agility.

Desirable Experience and Training

Experience in work involving public contact, preferably in a municipal police department or in an armed services police unit; graduation from high school or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Having attended the Basic Police School or be willing to attend basic police school within the first year.

Equipment Used

Police cruisers (fully equipped), firearms, basic medical equipment, mace, PR-24, handcuffs, various tools pertaining to crime scene processing and accident investigation.
