Job Summary
Must be available for 1–2 shifts weekly: 6:15 am–2:45 pm, 9 am–5:30 pm, 12 pm–8:30 pm.
A Phlebotomist contributes to the accurate and timely diagnosis of patients’ medical conditions by collecting blood specimens for testing. Serves as the primary point of contact for patients, providing clerical services that assure the exchange of necessary information between patient and treatment provider and coordinating ancillary services associated with meeting patient health care needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
- Collects blood specimens by venipuncture, meeting expectations for minimal number of draws required and volume of tests performed for outpatients, inpatients, emergency department patients, and D’Youville Pavilion patients.
- Collects blood specimens by specialized methods, including butterflies, heel sticks, finger sticks, and blood cultures.
- General phlebotomy skills: assess patient identification, label tubes, handle specimens, receive specimens into the laboratory computer system promptly and correctly, deliver specimens to correct areas, and enter appropriate comments for special handling requirements (IVs, fistulas, etc.).
- Organizes workflow to ensure all patients are drawn in a timely fashion.
- Responds to emergency buzzers in phlebotomy areas and bathrooms.
- Restocks and cleans phlebotomy areas and carts, pushes carts with needed supplies, biohazard collection devices, etc., and restocks/puts away supplies.
- Explains test procedures to patients.
- Orders laboratory tests: interprets test orders from physician’s requisition form, accurately inputs information into the laboratory computer, ensures no orders are overlooked, ascertains appropriate information from the patient, checks reference lab test requirements, and uses the Electronic Lab Catalog as a specimen collection and ordering reference tool.
- Clerical and reception duties: follows incident report investigation promptly, greets and directs patients courteously, answers patient questions about test protocols, answers telephones within three rings, takes verbal orders from physicians and completes yellow phone-in order sheets in Meditech, delivers printed reports to physician boxes, photocopies, checks orders and scans them into the EMR, performs short registration, and pulls lab orders from EPIC.
- General laboratory duties: wears appropriate personal protective equipment, follows safety rules, assists with inventory control and informs the Administrative Assistant when supplies must be ordered, dates, rotates, and stores supplies upon receipt, maintains a sanitary work environment, trains new employees, assists with periodic updates on procedure manuals, fills inventory requests for nursing units, takes daily temperatures, and maintains required licenses, certifications, and competencies while completing annual compliance courses on time.

- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
Requires visual discrimination and accurate depth perception. OSHA Category I exposure to blood/body fluids or tissue.
