Position: Part-Time Community Organizer (2–4 Positions Available)

Organizational Overview

Community Organizing Alliance (COA) is a grassroots organization working to build civic engagement within immigrant, Black, Brown, and historically underrepresented communities across Maine. Through organizing, leadership development, advocacy, and voter engagement, we work to ensure our communities are informed, engaged, and able to shape the decisions that impact their lives.

Position Overview

COA is hiring 2-4 part-time Community Organizers to support our 2026 voter engagement work in Maine!

Community Organizers will work directly with community members to increase voter participation, strengthen relationships with voters, recruit and engage volunteers, and ensure communities that are often overlooked by traditional campaigns have the information and support needed to participate in elections.

This is a field-focused position. Organizers should be comfortable talking with community members, canvassing, phone banking, building relationships, and working toward voter contact and volunteer recruitment goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach through door knocking, phone banking, texting, canvassing, community events, and other engagement activities.
  • Educate community members about voter registration, early voting, absentee voting, Election Day, and other civic engagement opportunities.
  • Recruit, engage, and support volunteers participating in COA's organizing and voter engagement efforts.
  • Build relationships with community members, particularly within immigrant, Black, Brown, youth, and historically underrepresented communities.
  • Meet weekly outreach, volunteer recruitment, and organizing goals.
  • Use VAN and Empower Project to manage voter and volunteer data, cut turf, coordinate field activities, and maintain accurate records.
  • Represent COA professionally and participate in staff meetings, trainings, canvasses, phone banks, and other organizing activities.
Qualifications

We are looking for people who are dependable, community-oriented, and excited about building civic participation.

Previous organizing, canvassing, voter engagement, community outreach, campaign, or volunteer experience is preferred but not required. Strong candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds, and the ability to work independently while being accountable to a team and measurable goals.

Knowledge of Maine communities and experience working with immigrant, Black, Brown, youth, or other underrepresented communities is strongly valued.

Multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

What We’re Looking For

COA is especially interested in organizers who understand that voter engagement is about more than getting someone to vote once. We want to build lasting relationships, develop community leaders, and strengthen the long-term civic power of our communities.

Organizers should be reliable, proactive, comfortable receiving feedback, and committed to following through on responsibilities and goals.

Location:

Maine, with fieldwork primarily in Lewiston, Auburn, Portland, and surrounding communities

Schedule:

Flexible, including some evenings and weekends during peak voter engagement periods.

Compensation:

$26/hour. Weekly hours can be flexible, ideally in the range of 10 - 30 per week. Candidates should have access to a working vehicle and car insurance, and will be reimbursed for work-related mileage at a rate of $0.56 per mile.

Employment Type:

Part-Time, Temporary (until Nov 15th) with an opportunity to apply for a permanent salaried position at the end of the year.
