Job Description

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a Per Diem RN Care Manager, known internally as a Nurse Navigator, to work directly with physician-led teams at Central Maine Healthcare Medical Oncology in Lewiston, ME. Experience in oncology is preferred. RNs with ED experience, acute care management, or a strong desire to work in oncology are encouraged to apply. Dedicated RNs with a willingness to learn are welcome.

RN Care Managers/Nurse Navigators use oncology clinical knowledge to offer individualized care to patients, families, and caregivers to help navigate the health care continuum. They provide nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office. They offer advice and counsel to patients and advise physicians of patient needs and recommended interventions, working collaboratively with physicians, APPs, RN peers, Patient Care Coordinators, and other clinical and non-clinical personnel within and outside the practice.

Responsibilities
  • Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
  • Assist physicians and conduct patient assessments.
  • Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for patient-specific needs promptly. Alert physician as needed to patient needs requiring intervention.
  • Follow up with patients by telephone to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.
  • Draw blood from ports, central lines, and peripheral IV access. Perform other procedures as needed.
  • Ensure follow-up appointments and tests/procedures are scheduled for patients.
  • Maintain patient care standards and assure that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, and documentation, are completed safely and effectively.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with all physicians, employees, and vendors.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community-sponsored programs specific to oncology and hematology.
  • Incorporate evidence-based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice directors.
  • Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed healthcare providers.
  • Demonstrate respect for the life, dignity, and rights of all persons.
Qualifications
  • Licensed Nurse within the State of Maine required.
  • 2–5 years of nursing professional experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Two years of hematology, chemotherapy, or oncology nursing experience preferred.
  • OCN certification preferred.
  • Must have or be able to obtain ONS Chemotherapy & Bio-therapy certification within 3 months of employment, supported through orientation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Detail-oriented, strong follow-up skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
