Public Health Nurse, Pediatric Nurse
We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate certified school nurse to provide comprehensive health services to students in grades PreK-12 in support of their academic success and overall well‑being. This position will be based at Monmouth Academy but will also support Monmouth Memorial School (next door), and, on occasion, Hall‑Dale Elementary School. The school nurse serves as the primary healthcare resource within the school, delivering direct student care, managing chronic health conditions, administering medications, and responding to medical emergencies.
The successful candidate will possess sound clinical judgment, strong communication with families and healthcare providers, and a genuine commitment to the health and development of elementary and middle school‑aged children.
- Assess, triage, and provide first aid and emergency care to students who become ill or injured during the school day.
- Maintain a safe and welcoming health office that supports the physical and emotional well‑being of all students.
- Monitor and manage the health needs of students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, severe allergies, seizure disorders) in coordination with families and healthcare providers.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with complex medical needs.
- Administer medications in accordance with Maine Department of Education regulations and district policy, maintaining accurate records of all medication administration.
- Maintain accurate, confidential health records for all students in compliance with FERPA and applicable Maine statutes.
- Review and verify student immunization records; identify and follow up on students who are out of compliance with Maine immunization requirements.
- Conduct required health screenings (vision, hearing) and refer students for follow‑up care as appropriate.
- Complete required state and district health reporting in a timely and accurate manner.
- Communicate proactively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, injury or illness, and care plans.
- Serve as a resource and consultant to teachers, staff, and administrators on health‑related matters affecting students.
- Collaborate with special education staff, school counselors, and other support personnel to address the holistic needs of students with health‑related IEP or 504 accommodations.
- Coordinate with community healthcare providers and outside agencies as needed to support student health.
- Identify and respond to communicable disease concerns in a manner consistent with Maine CDC guidelines.
- Promote health literacy and wellness among students through classroom presentations and school‑wide initiatives as appropriate.
- Educate staff on recognizing health concerns and responding to medical emergencies, including training on the use of epinephrine auto‑injectors, glucagon, and other emergency medications.
- Current Maine Registered Nurse License
- Possess (or be eligible) Maine DOE certification as a School Nurse (524)
- Current Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) certification
- Current certification in CPR/AED
- Three (3) years experience as a professional registered nurse
- Experience working in pediatrics (ages 4 to 21) preferred
- Knowledge of current practices for common childhood conditions and chronic conditions especially asthma, allergies, diabetes & seizure disorders
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Possess flexibility to vary the schedule based on district needs
