Position: City Transit Operator

Role Description

The City Transit Operator is a full-time, on-site role based in Lewiston - Auburn, ME, responsible for safely operating transit vehicles on assigned routes and schedules. Daily tasks include driving designated routes, following traffic and safety regulations, assisting passengers with boarding and exiting, and providing clear, courteous information about stops and schedules. The operator monitors vehicle condition, performs basic pre- and post-trip inspections, and promptly reports any mechanical issues or safety concerns.

The role involves handling fares, completing required logs and documentation, and cooperating with dispatchers and supervisors to maintain service reliability. City Transit Operators represent RTW Management to the community and are expected to deliver consistent, professional, and respectful customer service to all riders.

Qualifications
  • Strong Transit Operations skills, including route adherence, time management, and familiarity with local transit standards.
  • Proficient in Defensive Driving, with a strong focus on safety, situational awareness, and adherence to traffic laws.
  • Effective Communication skills for interacting with passengers, dispatch, and team members in a clear, respectful manner.
  • Customer Service and interpersonal skills to support riders of diverse backgrounds and needs, including individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience with Training or willingness to participate in ongoing training and certification programs related to transit operations and safety.
  • Valid driver’s license; commercial driver’s license (CDL) with passenger endorsement or ability to obtain one as required.
  • Ability to meet applicable background checks, driving record standards, and medical/fitness requirements for transit operators.

    Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work assigned shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
