TITLE:
Manager / Associate Director – System Protection Engineering (Transmission/Utilities) DFW and Greater Houston
POSITION SUMMARY:
Our client, a leading Texas electric transmission and distribution utility, is seeking a Manager / Associate Director – System Protection Engineering to lead the strategic and operational direction of its System Protection organization. This is a leadership role responsible for overseeing engineering standards, protection systems, compliance initiatives, infrastructure modernization projects, and technical operations that support transmission and distribution reliability in a regulated utility environment.
The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in protection and controls engineering, utility infrastructure, NERC compliance, and technical team leadership, and the ability to drive long-term engineering strategy and operational excellence.
IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS:
• Strong technical expertise within electric utility System Protection / Protection & Controls engineering
• Experience leading engineering teams and managing technical personnel within a regulated utility environment
• Deep understanding of relay protection systems, substations, telecommunications, metering, and transmission/distribution systems
• Strong working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and compliance requirements
• Experience supporting utility capital expansion, modernization, and infrastructure replacement projects
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university
• 7+ years of experience within an electric utility environment focused on Protection & Controls / System Protection Engineering
• Minimum 2 years of leadership or people management experience
• Strong understanding of transmission and distribution utility systems
• Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and compliance requirements
• Demonstrated experience managing complex engineering projects and multiple priorities
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's degree in Engineering
• Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Experience with protection engineering and testing tools, including:
- ASPEN One Liner
- Doble
- Omicron
- Enoserv RTS
- SEL, Client, and Novatech relay platforms
• Lead the strategic and day-to-day functions of the System Protection Engineering group
• Oversee engineering activities associated with multiple concurrent utility infrastructure and capital projects
• Develop and implement protection schemes, relay communication systems, metering, controls, station standards, and line standards
• Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, ASTM, NFPA, and other applicable state and federal regulations
• Serve as a technical subject matter expert related to system protection and NERC compliance
• Oversee quality assurance efforts associated with new and existing utility infrastructure projects
• Develop annual performance objectives, long-term departmental strategy, and operational goals
• Manage capital, O&M, and E&S budgets associated with the department
• Recommend and implement improvements to engineering and construction standards
• Coordinate closely with System Planning, System Engineering, Power Operations, Distribution Operations, and Maintenance teams
• Represent the organization on engineering, operating, and standards committees
• Lead, mentor, and develop engineering and technical staff through coaching, performance management, and technical leadership
