GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The employee is responsible for daily activities associated with the processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures; participates in the education of pathology residents in tissue processing and in quality assurance activities related to these processes. The incumbent will serve as a Grossing Technician in the Gross Room and Frozen Section Services area under the supervision of the Pathologists' Assistant Lead or Medical Director of Pathology Services.
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
:
- Performs gross examinations, dissection and description of tissues.
- Workload is prioritized to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT) and specimen requirements.
- Maintain competence and acquire new skills as procedures and technologies change.
- Tissue sampling, gross descriptions and dictations are accurate and per procedure.
- Specimens are photographed when appropriate for archival purposes.
- Performs gross procedures and dictation on routine and complex specimens as required.
- Disposes of specimens as per guidelines and accreditation requirements.
- Maintains, repairs and troubleshoots equipment; contact company technical service as required.
- Maintains digital equipment, prepares digital photos, and assists with uploading and storage of digital files.
- Maintains gross room and frozen section areas clean; keeps tools and areas organized.
- Maintains tissue storage area/racks, keeping them clean and ready for rapid retrieval.
- Compliance with guidelines and accreditation requirements for tissue storage.
- Trains and educates laboratory personnel and residents in processing of surgical tissues.
- Communicates gross room procedures clearly to staff; resolves problems with appropriate consultation.
- Evaluates resident performance with managerial and medical staff.
Quality, Safety and Compliance: Applies compliance guidelines to testing and reporting activities; handles chemicals, hazardous wastes and sharps safely; collects and summarizes Quality Assurance data; suggests process improvement initiatives.
- Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of Surgical Pathology protocols.
- Updates procedure manuals annually to reflect current methodology and accreditation standards.
- Uses electronic information/data systems to access and input tissue information and department communications accurately.
- Ensures accuracy and quality in all activities.
Education:
- Associate’s degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent education/training.
- 60 semester hours or equivalent, including specific science coursework as described, and ABHES-accredited clinical laboratory training as applicable.
Experience:
- 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required.
Certification/Licensure:
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.
