Prototype Manager - Retail Manufacturing

Overview

The Prototype Manager oversees all manufacturing activities related to prototype and sample production. This role manages a team of skilled fabricators—including metalworkers, wood craftsmen, assembly technicians, and finishing specialists—to deliver high-quality prototypes that meet customer and development requirements. The Prototype Manager ensures efficient scheduling, prioritization, and execution of prototype builds while maintaining clear communication with Development Project Managers and Account Managers.

This position requires strong leadership, hands-on manufacturing knowledge, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.

• Supervise and mentor prototype manufacturing team members, including metal fabricators, wood craftsmen, assembly, and finishing specialists.
• Develop and manage prototype production schedules, prioritizing jobs based on development timelines and customer needs with the use of Salesforce.
• Work closely with Development Project Managers and Account Managers to align project requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
• Oversee fabrication processes within materials such as metal, wood, plastics and 3D printing to ensure prototypes meet design specifications and quality standards.
• Allocate labor, materials, and equipment effectively to optimize workflow and minimize delays.
• Coordinates with procurement on material buying and timelines.
• Provide regular updates to Development Project Managers on prototype status and any issues impacting timelines which includes driving a weekly meeting to align all stakeholders.
• Address fabrication challenges quickly and implement solutions to keep projects on track.
• Manage inventory of samples by aligning with sales on what’s necessary to stock or dispose of.
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols and company standards in all prototype operations.

This position has direct reports.

• Strong technical skills in product design, engineering, and manufacturing are essential.
• Knowledge of CAD software, 3D printing, and other prototyping tools and technologies may be required.
• Ability to read assembly prints and understand engineering drawings and documents in order to carry out the instructions according to specifications.
• Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet very time sensitive deadlines.
• Proficient computer skills in Outlook for emailing, Excel, and EPICOR
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage complex projects, develop schedules, and coordinate resources effectively to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of prototypes.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are critical to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and clients.
• Strong Leadership and interpersonal skills to manage teams, resolve conflicts, and foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
• Attention to detail to ensure that prototypes meet design specifications and quality standards.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or related field is preferred.
• 5+ years in a manufacturing environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
• Hands on experience working in wood, metal and plastics fabrication.

• Must be able to work in a non-climate controlled facility in both hot and cold climates.
• Varying work schedules based on business need are sometimes required.
• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear.
• Ability to read drawings and blueprints.
• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Ability to carry and lift materials up to 100 lbs with assistance.
