Top Secret Optical Communications Engineer

Required Skills & Experience
• PhD preferred in Physics, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or related scientific discipline
• 10+ years of experience supporting optical communications, photonics, or laser communications research
• Experience with Free Space Optical (FSO) Communications / Laser Communications
• Strong understanding of photonics, atmospheric propagation, and optical networking
• Ability to evaluate current technologies and guide future research initiatives
• Active DoD T5 Investigation

Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Experience supporting military or space communications programs
• Knowledge of the commercial optical communications ecosystem
• Familiarity with Starlink, Google, Amazon, Meta, or similar optical communications initiatives
• Experience leading advanced research efforts or technical strategy initiatives
• Government laboratory or defense research experience (NRL, AFRL, MIT Lincoln Labs, APL, etc.)

Job Description

Insight Global is seeking a qualified Top Secret Optical Communications Engineer in support of one of our federal clients in Washington, DC. This individual will support advanced research initiatives focused on laser communications. This team is focused on transmitting information using laser-based technologies through the atmosphere and space to enable future high-speed military and space communications capabilities. A qualified candidate will possess deep expertise in photonics, optical communications, laser communications, and atmospheric propagation with the ability to understand current commercial capabilities, future military requirements, and the technologies that can only be solved through advanced government research.

• Research and evaluate next-generation optical and laser-based communication technologies
• Analyze atmospheric effects and technical limitations impacting communications performance
• Guide research direction and identify future technology development opportunities
• Develop concepts to support high-speed communications for military and space applications
• Assess commercial technology trends and determine where government-funded research is needed
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to solve advanced communications challenges
