Position Summary
The Interim Accountant provides temporary accounting support to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with governmental regulations, and continuity of operations during periods of transition, staffing shortages, or special projects. This role supports general ledger activities, reconciliations, reporting, and audit preparation while adhering to government accounting standards and internal controls.
Key Responsibilities- Perform general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Prepare financial reports in accordance with governmental accounting standards (GASB).
- Support budget tracking, grant accounting, and fund accounting activities.
- Reconcile bank accounts, interfund balances, and subsidiary ledgers.
- Assist with preparation for audits and provide documentation to auditors.
- Review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions for accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with government regulations, policies, and internal controls.
- Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to improve processes.
- Support system implementations, cleanup projects, or backlog reduction as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 3–7+ years of accounting experience (government or nonprofit experience strongly preferred).
- Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, including fund accounting.
- Experience with ERP systems (such as Tyler Munis, Oracle, SAP, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, reconciliations, data analysis).
- Ability to quickly adapt and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- CPA or CPA-eligible preferred but not required.
