PART TIME UPPER SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER
Sayre School is seeking a highly motivated and qualified part‑time English teacher who desires a professional and fun working environment dedicated to student growth and achievement. We welcome applications from candidates who embrace the challenges and joys of teaching upper school students and who have a passion for their subject. We aim to hire educators who add to our collective excellence through their individual talents, perspectives, and personality.
Please see our Upper School Teacher Profile to learn more about who we aspire to be.
Job responsibilities and opportunities include:
- Teaching English elective classes with a significant focus on writing and revision.
- Preparing students for the complex, iterative writing process across disciplines.
- Following English department curriculum guidance and Upper School directives.
- Being accessible to students outside of class via email and limited office hours on campus.
The Upper School English Department aims to cultivate curiosity as we guide students to read responsibly, write to discover, and tailor their communication to authentic audiences. We seek a part‑time instructor to teach 1‑2 elective courses per semester that will earn the writing credit required for Sayre graduation. Recent electives have included Mythology, Science Fiction & Fantasy Literature, and various topics in Creative Writing, and we welcome proposals for these topics or for other semester‑long courses aimed at a mix of 10th‑12th grade learners.
Electives should include active, in‑class learning, minimal homework, and a sustained focus on the drafting, writing, and revision process. See the Upper School Schedule.
Interested applicants should email a resume, a cover letter that includes elective courses they could teach, a brief teaching philosophy, and the names of at least three references to the Upper School Director, Dr. Clint Calzini (ccalzini) and English Department Chair, Dr. Lindsay O’Connor (loconnor). Please include your last name and “English at Sayre” in the subject line.
