Job Summary

Assist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.

Essential Job Functions
  • Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
  • Promote student independence across all relevant educational settings.
  • Assist teachers and related service professionals with health‑related procedures (e.g., tube feeding, medication administration, toileting, positioning) and maintain appropriate records.
  • Keep student data current and report concerns to teachers.
  • Under teacher guidance, implement learning strategies, prompting procedures, and systematic instructional procedures in school and non‑school settings using diverse grouping arrangements.
  • Implement teacher‑developed plans that enhance fluency, maintenance, and generalization of academic skills.
  • Assist teachers with community‑based instruction.
  • Use grammatically correct language, age‑appropriate vocabulary, and appropriate tone of voice for reinforcement procedures.
  • Perform routine clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, setting up student work areas, operating office and adaptive equipment, and maintaining classroom and attendance records.
  • Assist teachers in monitoring student progress regarding academic/cognitive development, social development, and behavior.
  • Assist teachers and other professionals in maintaining student records required by federal and state law and district policies.
  • Implement behavior plans and techniques in accordance with laws and procedural safeguards, including safe crisis management; lift up to 50 pounds and/or restrain students if necessary.
  • Monitor and assist students in non‑academic learning environments (lunchroom, study hall, playground, bus).
  • Direct group activities, assist in lunchroom duties, emergency drills, recreational activities, assemblies, and community participation as assigned.
  • Oversee students in regular class, labs, or other activities, providing necessary materials.
  • Follow teacher instructions and implement team decisions.
  • Contribute objective information to facilitate planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Perform responsibilities under teacher supervision in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Participate in designing and implementing professional development activities for paraprofessionals.
  • Assist in administering diagnostic tests and recording test information.
  • Read, understand, and assist in implementing, recording, and monitoring assigned student IEPs.
  • Assist students to and from activities, including loading, unloading, and riding the bus.
  • Provide emotional support and a friendly, caring attitude to students and staff.
  • Create a conducive learning environment; address behavior distractions per teacher guidance.
  • Conference with teacher/case manager concerning programs, materials, and parent communication.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices, PBIS, and de‑escalation techniques; annual training may be required.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate in more than one language or willingness to learn basic proficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic subjects taught in district schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading).
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Basic record‑keeping techniques.

Ability to:

  • Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public, including ethnic communities.
  • Perform routine clerical duties supporting classroom activities.
