Assist a certified teacher in planning and implementing instructional practices with preschool students, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, monitoring and reporting student progress, and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure quality instruction. The role may include health‑related duties, behavior management, and support for students with special needs.
Essential Job Functions- Work with students individually or in small groups, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher and maintaining records of progress.
- Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
- Assist teachers and related service professionals with health‑related procedures (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, medication administration) for students with special health care needs, and keep appropriate records.
- Serve as a member of the instructional team, developing relationships with parents/families and team members, and providing objective information to facilitate planning and decision‑making.
- Monitor and transport students to and from activities and non‑academic environments, such as lunchrooms, playgrounds, and buses.
- Prepare and organize lessons as directed by the teacher; administer and score a variety of assessments according to guidelines.
- Implement learning strategies, prompting procedures, and other systematic instructional procedures under teacher supervision.
- Administer diagnostic and other assessments, record results, and assist in implementing and monitoring student IEPs.
- Monitor and report student behavior, supporting teacher‑developed behavior plans and crisis‑management procedures; may require lifting up to 50 lb and/or restraining students.
- Maintain student records required by federal, state, and district regulations.
- Perform routine clerical duties, including preparing instructional materials, operating copy machines, maintaining records, and managing attendance.
- Provide support by setting up work areas, displays, and operating audiovisual and educational training equipment.
- Use grammatically correct, age‑appropriate language and reinforcement procedures.
- Direct group activities, assist with meal times, emergency drills, gross‑motor activities, assemblies, and family activities as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and family records.
- Participate in professional development activities for paraprofessionals.
- Provide emotional support and a friendly, caring attitude toward students and staff.
- Assist in creating a learning‑conducive environment; implement behavioral guidelines when needed.
- Perform duties professionally and ethically under teacher supervision.
- Conference with teachers and instructional teams regarding programs, materials, and student needs; communicate concerns to parents as required.
- Assure health and safety by following CPR, first aid, PBIS, and de‑escalation techniques; annual safe‑crisis‑management training may be required.
- Maintain regular attendance and report absences per district policy.
- Assist students with physical tasks such as dressing, moving between rooms, toileting, diapering, and bus boarding/unboarding.
- Contact parents/families for absent students; make home visits with school staff.
- Participate in meetings and in‑service training; 18 hours of professional development required annually.
- Demonstrate or be willing to learn communication in more than one language at a novice level.
