Job Summary

Assist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.

Essential Job Functions
  • Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
  • Promote student independence across all relevant educational settings.
  • Assist with health‑care procedures (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, medication, feeding, positioning) for students with special health‑care needs, maintaining accurate records.
  • Keep student data current and report concerns to teachers promptly.
  • Under guidance, implement learning strategies, prompting procedures, and systematic instructional procedures in school and non‑school settings.
  • Execute teacher‑developed plans or strategies that enhance fluency, maintenance, and generalization of academic skills.
  • Assist with community‑based instruction and other services as needed.
  • Use grammatically correct, age‑appropriate language with students.
  • Perform routine clerical duties, including preparing instructional materials, setting up student work areas, operating office equipment, and maintaining records.
  • Help monitor student progress (academic, cognitive, social, behavior) and maintain required records.
  • Implement behavior plans and techniques in compliance with laws and regulations, including safe crisis management; record data and monitor behavior goals.
  • Monitor students in non‑academic learning environments (lunchrooms, study halls, playgrounds, buses).
  • Direct group activities, assist in lunchroom duties, emergency drills, rec‑leisure activities, assemblies, and community participation.
  • Assist students during regular activities and in providing necessary materials.
  • Follow teacher instructions and team decisions.
  • Provide relevant, objective information to teachers and other professionals for planning and decision‑making.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Perform assigned responsibilities under teacher supervision in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of professional development for paraprofessionals.
  • Assist in administering diagnostic and other tests and record test information.
  • Assist with IEP implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Assist students with transportation and related activities.
  • Provide positive attitude, caring demeanor, and emotional support.
  • Create a supportive learning environment; implement teacher‑provided guidelines for behavior.
  • Collaborate with teachers/case managers to address program and material needs, and discuss concerns with parents.
  • Ensure student health and safety by following PBIS, de‑escalation techniques, and safety practices.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn additional languages or communicate in multiple languages at a basic level.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Basic subjects taught in district schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading).
