SUMMARY Under direction, the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) teacher introduces, implements, and facilitates experiences and instruction that support the development and learning for preschool children including those with disabilities. The preschool teacher assist pupils and parents in making an appropriate transition from the home centered environment to the more structured educational environment. The IECE educator collaborates with families, primary caregivers, colleagues, and other service personnel to design and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences for preschool children.

The teacher will also perform other related functions as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This position classification requires child development and subject matter expertise commonly associated with the instruction of three to five year-old students. The position classification requires instructional decision-making skills necessary for making educational decisions of considerable consequence. These decisions include, but are not limited to decisions that determine how best to provide individualized instruction to children with a wide range of learning needs.

The functional role of this position classification requires the application and interpretation of data, facts, procedures, and policies. The incumbent meets frequently with families, school administrators, other teachers, therapists, internal staff, and members of the community to communicate information, data, and alternative problem solutions. This position involves sitting part of the time, but also requires walking and standing for extended periods.

This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with materials and objects, and providing oral information.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Provide learning experiences in such areas as language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health education, physical education, and arts and humanities.

Utilize the series Building A Strong Foundation for School Success:
Kentucky’s Early Childhood Standards, Continuous Assessment Guide, and Quality Self Study in the planning and development of the preschool classroom program.

Utilize a variety of methodology in teaching and instructing pupils, including subject matter instruction, demonstration, activity participation, and interacting with a variety of educational technology, equipment, materials, and learning aids.

Prepare, develop, and use a variety of instructional materials appropriate for verbal and visual instruction of pupils with a wide range of intellectual, physical, and emotional maturity.

Work with parents and other school constituents to review, analyze, and evaluate the history and background of pupils in designing an educational program to meet specific individual needs.

Provide individual, small group, and whole group instruction designed to enhance the pupils’ mental, social, and emotional growth.

Establish standards for student behavior utilizing a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques, including behavior modification, reinforcement, and other positive behavior shaping processes.
