Job SummaryAssist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.
Essential Job Functions- Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
- Promote student independence across all relevant educational settings.
- Assist teachers and related service professionals with health‑care procedures such as tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, medication administration, feeding, positioning and maintain records.
- Keep student data current and report concerns to teachers.
- Under guidance of a teacher, implement learning strategies, prompting procedures and other systematic instructional procedures using a variety of grouping arrangements.
- Implement teacher‑developed plans or strategies that enhance fluency, maintenance, and generalization of academic skills.
- Assist teachers with community‑based instruction.
- Use grammatically correct language and appropriate tone, vocabulary, reinforcement procedures.
- Perform routine clerical duties: preparation of instructional materials, setting up student work areas, operation of office equipment, video, computer, adaptive devices, maintaining records, attendance records, answering phone.
- Assist teachers in monitoring student progress regarding academic/cognitive development, social development, and behavior.
- Maintain student records required by federal and state law, and district policies.
- Implement behavior plans, manage student behaviors, including lifting up to 50 lbs and restraining if necessary, record data and monitor progress.
- Monitor students in non‑academic environments such as lunchroom, study halls, playgrounds, buses.
- Direct group activities, assist in lunchroom duties, emergency drills, leisure activities, assemblies, community participation.
- Assist in overseeing students in regular class, labs, and other activities, ensuring participation materials.
- Follow teacher instructions and implement team decisions.
- Contribute objective information to facilitate planning, problem solving and decision‑making.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Perform responsibilities under teacher supervision with professionalism and ethics.
- Participate in design and implementation of paraprofessional professional development.
- Assist in administering diagnostic and other tests, record test information.
- Assist in implementing, recording and monitoring assigned student IEPs.
- Assist students to and from activities, loading, unloading and/or riding the bus, assist in preparation as required.
- Provide emotional support, friendly attitude and guidance.
- Provide support creating a conducive learning environment, implement guidelines if behavior distracts.
- Conference with teacher/case manager on programs and materials, discuss concerns with parents.
- Ensure health and safety of students following practices and PBIS, de‑escalation techniques, may require training.
- Communicate in more than one language or willingness to learn at novice level.
- Perform other duties as assigned; maintain regular attendance.
- Basic subjects taught in District Schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading).
- Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
- Interpersonal skills: tact, patience, courtesy.
- Basic record‑keeping techniques.
- Ability to learn child guidance principles and practices.
- Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and public, including ethnic communities.
- Carry out routine clerical duties, print and write legibly, perform basic math, follow directions, learn procedures, communicate effectively orally and in writing.
