Job DescriptionJob Summary:
Assist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.
Essential Job Functions- Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
- Promote student independence across all relevant educational settings.
- Assist teachers and related services professionals in carrying out health‑related procedures (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, medication administration, feeding, positioning) for students with special health care needs and maintain appropriate records.
- Keep student data current and report concerns to teacher when they arise.
- Effectively implement learning strategies, prompting procedures, and systematic instructional procedures under teacher supervision.
- Implement teacher‑developed plans to enhance fluency, maintenance, and generalization of academic skills.
- Assist teachers with community‑based instruction based on program and student needs.
- Use grammatically correct, age‑appropriate language and reinforcement procedures.
- Perform routine clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, setting up student work areas, operating office equipment, maintaining classroom and attendance records, and answering phone calls.
- Assist in monitoring student progress regarding academic, cognitive, social, and behavioral development.
- Maintain student records required by federal and state law, regulations, and district policies.
- Implement teacher‑developed behavior plans and techniques, including safe crisis management, and record data on behavior goals.
- Monitor and assist students in non‑academic learning environments (lunchrooms, study halls, playgrounds, buses).
- Direct group activities, assist in lunchroom duties, emergency drills, recreational activities, assemblies, and community participation as assigned.
- Assist in overseeing students during regular class, labs, or other activities, providing necessary materials.
- Follow teacher instructions and team decisions.
- Contribute objective information to teachers and other professionals for planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making.
- Maintain confidentiality of individual students and families and all educational records.
- Perform responsibilities under teacher supervision in a professional and ethical manner.
- Participate with administrators and professionals in designing and implementing professional development activities for paraprofessionals.
- Assist in administering diagnostic and other tests and record test information.
- Read, understand, and assist in implementing IEPs for assigned students.
- Assist students to and from activities, loading, unloading, and riding the bus and preparation as required.
- Provide emotional support, positive attitude, caring attitude, and general guidance.
- Create an environment conducive to learning; implement guidelines given by the teacher when student behavior hinders instruction.
- Conference with the teacher/case manager concerning programs, materials, and student needs; discuss concerns with parents as needed.
- Assure health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and protocols, including PBIS and de‑escalation techniques.
- Demonstrate ability or willingness to communicate in more than one language at a novice level.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Basic school subjects (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading).
