Environmental Education Assistant

Terms of Employment: 11‑months

Exemption Status:
Non‑Exempt

AFSCME Scale: UB1 G15‑16

Annual Salary Range: $52,220 to $83,211, contingent on years of relevant experience.

Qualifications, Education, Skills, Abilities
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Science, Education (Elementary or Science preferred), Natural Resource Management, or equivalent
  • Successful teaching experience in environmental education in an outdoor setting preferred
  • Preferred experience in coordinating group dynamics and teaching/working with elementary age students
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and flexible, 8‑hour shifts (7:30‑3:30 and 11:00‑7:00)
  • CPR and First aid certification preferred
Essential Job Functions
  • Assists in the development and implementation of environmental education activities (primarily elementary)
  • Care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, captive animals, and exhibits at NCEEC
  • Provides Environmental Education instruction to students and teachers in interpretive programs (outreach and the 5th grade Meaningful Watershed Education Experience MWEE)
  • Assist in teacher professional development relevant to the scope of the environmental project
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Environmental Education Resource Teacher

Physical Requirements

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10‑50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard.

The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
