Position Overview:

As a Junior Accountant at Galen College of Nursing, you will support accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting by preparing journal entries, performing reconciliations, assisting with month-end close, and partnering with HR / payroll and campus leaders on day-to-day accounting needs. The role emphasizes strong internal controls, documentation, and customer service to internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Payroll and timekeeping support: coordinate collection/validation of adjunct and staff timekeeping data (e.g., UKG/Kronos), reconcile payroll-related GL accounts, and prepare payroll journal entries in partnership with HR.
  • Month-end close: prepare recurring and adjusting journal entries (accruals, prepaids, payroll allocations), maintain supporting schedules, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Reconciliations: perform timely, well-documented reconciliations for assigned balance sheet accounts (e.g., cash/bank, payroll-related liabilities, A/R, A/P, prepaids, fixed assets) and resolve reconciling items promptly.
  • General ledger maintenance: post entries accurately across multiple entities; support intercompany transactions and eliminate differences.
  • Bank reconciliations: prepare monthly bank and credit card reconciliations; investigate and correct variances.
  • Accounts payable/receivable support: provide backup processing, coding, and 1099 support; assist with cash application and aging follow-up as needed.
  • Fixed assets & depreciation: maintain asset additions/disposals and monthly depreciation schedules in accordance with GAAP and organizational policy.
  • Financial analysis: perform basic variance analyses and ad hoc reporting to support campus leaders and senior accountants.
  • Systems & data: effectively use Sage, Excel (lookups, pivot tables), and payroll/timekeeping systems to ensure data quality and efficiency.
  • Training & service: deliver courteous, timely support to internal stakeholders; assist in developing and delivering brief trainings on timekeeping and expense procedures.
  • Confidentiality & ethics: safeguard sensitive information and adhere to professional standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Position Requirements
    • Education: Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; progress toward CPA or equivalent credential is a plus.
    • Experience: 2-3 years of relevant accounting experience (internships and co-op terms count). Exposure to month-end close and account reconciliations preferred.
    • Technical

      Skills:

      Working knowledge of GAAP; solid Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups); familiarity with an ERP and payroll/timekeeping systems (e.g., UKG/Kronos). Power BI or similar analytics tools a plus.
    • Professional

      Skills:

      High attention to detail, organization, and follow-through; strong written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple deadlines in a collaborative, service-oriented environment.
    • Physical/Mental Demands & Work Environment: Ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods; operate a computer and standard office equipment; communicate effectively; and maintain normal motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
