  • Required License/Registration/Certification: Active Kentucky Registered Nurse (RN) license, Temporary Work Permit (TWP), Provisional License or active compact state RN license in good standing and American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers valid for at least 6 months after employment date
  • Physical Requirements: The essential functions include lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling 50-100 pounds daily and 25-50 pounds frequently; standing, walking and sitting for long periods. May be exposed to communicable diseases, hazards of radiation, and injury from patients or sharps.
  • Shift: Must be able to work two 12-hour shifts every week from 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday night as part of the Weekend Premium Plan (WEPP). Some holidays may be required.
  • Job Summary: Registered nurses in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at UK Chandler Hospital provide intensive neurological and neurosurgical care for adult patients (15 years and older). Patient conditions include head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injuries and other neurological conditions. The RN serves as a component of the critical care team, responsible for close hemodynamic, medication and ventilator monitoring and treatment of complications related to neurological injury.

    The primary responsibilities include providing total, comprehensive, continuous, patient-centered care, assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a nursing care plan; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties for Nursing Care Technicians; and adhering to University policies and regulations. The environment supports collaborative efforts to improve patient outcomes with a patient-centered plan of care.
  • Skills / Knowledge / Abilities: Knowledge of Maslow’s Eight Basic Human Needs, Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns, and Swanson’s Caring model; strong direct patient care and critical thinking; basic computer navigation and internet skills; professional communication with patients, families, co-workers and physicians; strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills; ability to work in a team and independently.
