The Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky is seeking a highly motivated Genomics Research Specialist to contribute to innovative research in microbial whole-genome sequencing (WGS), RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), bacteriophage biology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), host–pathogen interactions, and One Health infectious disease research.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

Experimental Design & Sequencing Strategy
  • Assist in planning microbial WGS and RNA-seq experiments.
  • Select appropriate sequencing strategies for different research objectives.
  • Support Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, Pac Bio, and hybrid sequencing workflows.
  • Develop sequencing workflows and optimize protocols.
  • Troubleshoot sequencing and library preparation challenges.
DNA/RNA Extraction & Library Preparation

Perform high-quality molecular biology techniques including:

  • DNA extraction
  • RNA extraction
  • High-molecular-weight DNA preparation
  • PCR
  • qPCR
  • RT-PCR
  • Library preparation
  • Library quality assessment
  • Nucleic acid quantification

Support sequencing library preparation for:

  • Whole-genome sequencing
  • Transcriptomics

Experience with the following platforms is highly desirable:

  • Oxford Nanopore Technologies
  • Pac Bio

Candidates with experience in short-read, long-read, and hybrid genome sequencing will be highly competitive.

Qualifications & Skills Required

Applicants should possess:

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Genetics, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Experience in DNA/RNA extraction.
  • Library preparation for sequencing.
  • Sequencing quality control.
  • Excellent laboratory documentation and organizational skills.

A PhD and previous experience with microbial genomics, bacteriophage research, or sequencing-based infectious disease research are preferred

Preferred Skills

Ideal candidates will have experience in:

  • Bacteriophage biology
  • Antimicrobial resistance
  • Transcriptomics
  • BSL-2 laboratory practices
  • Workflow optimization
