Job Summary
Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, pick up and discharge students; provide safe & efficient transportation for district students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and maintenance of the vehicle; assist in loading/unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students as necessary.
Essential Job Functions- Drive a school bus over designated routes and time schedules in compliance with the State regulations.
- Pickup and discharge students at established bus stops, reporting any safety incidents.
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and maintenance, including cleaning, checking fuel, oil, water, brakes, lights, and doors, and report mechanical defects.
- Maintain order and discipline on the bus and manage interactions with students, parents, school officials, and the public.
- Execute emergency evacuation drills as required by Kentucky Administration Regulations.
- Transport physically and mentally handicapped children, including lifting and securing wheelchairs.
- Observe all applicable local, state, and federal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Fuel and clean the bus exterior and interior, removing debris and sweeping/mopping the floor.
- Maintain records of vehicle maintenance, mileage, and number of children transported; prepare conduct, incident, and accident reports.
- Attend safety and preventive emergency meetings.
- Utilize a two‑way radio for bus‑to‑bus and bus‑to‑base communication.
- Perform first‑aid duties according to established guidelines.
- Communicate in more than one language or be willing to learn at a novice level of proficiency.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance.
Knowledge of
- Safe driving practices.
- State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations for student transportation.
- First‑aid practices.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Ability to
- Operate a school bus on designated routes and schedules.
- Maintain order and discipline among students while driving.
- Keep the vehicle clean and safe.
- Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
- Learn bus routes, stops, and traffic hazards.
- Maintain routine records.
- Establish cooperative relationships with others.
- Follow oral and written directions.
- Meet schedules and timelines.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Follow legal and defensive driving practices.
- Assist in loading/unloading of handicapped children.
- Lift heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs).
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate, or evidence of progress toward a G.E.D.
- At least one year of experience driving a motor vehicle.
- Stand, sit, and walk for extended periods.
- Communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
- Use hands for grasping and fine manipulations.
- Bend, squat, crawl, climb, and reach as needed.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights up to 50 pounds.
- Operate around moving machinery and be exposed to temperature, humidity, dust, fumes, and gases.
Pay Rate: $15 per hour
