A high-level technical team leader with the expectation of independent functionality. The Production & Procurement Team Lead is responsible for providing daily production leadership and personnel guidance by overseeing the activities of the team and scheduling/procedure adherence. The Production & Procurement Team Lead will be involved in the daily oversight of a swine breeding herd and the associated business functionalities and meeting the business needs associated with said herd.
The Team Leader will oversee all aspects of animal production and procurement, meeting the business objectives, as well as transportation to customers. This position will work closely with the Husbandry Operations Team Lead to ensure good communication and uniformity with training, logistics of the barn, etc.
Salary range: $58,471.14 – $65,487.52.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Provide oversight to the swine production facility, including breeding, piglet processing, animal allocation for internal studies, outside sales and transportation coordination.
- Schedule and assist with cleaning and sanitization of late gestation and nursery animal housing and support areas related to the processing of piglets.
- Oversee Production & Procurement Team, including hiring and disciplinary actions, scheduling of breeding tasks (e.g. artificial insemination (AI), ultrasound, sow crate loading/unloading, weaning of piglets, piglet processing, vaccination, body weights, pre-shipment evaluations, health certificates, etc.).
- Maintain compliance with USDA AWA regulations, the Guide/Ag Guide, AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia and AAALAC standards.
- Handle and restrain swine of various ages.
- Identify, notify, and assist with resolution of issues related to animal care and housing in a timely fashion (e.g., problems with lighting, temperature, humidity, cage repair, light handyman duties, facility preventative maintenance, etc.).
- Assist with animal transportation, including coordination of shipping/receiving and driving a company-owned vehicle.
- Perform food consumption and clinical observations, as required.
- Order age-appropriate feed and coordinate bulk delivery.
- Perform weekly and monthly facility duties (e.g. eye wash stations, carcass disposal, filter replacement, maintain equipment/caging, etc.)
- Function as a Designated Trainer for various standard operating procedures.
- Assist, as needed, technical staff in departmental areas.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on organization and customer service.
- Work effectively as a team member and leader.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Education: High school or GED required. BA/BS in scientific field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3-5 years experience working in livestock breeding operations required and previous supervisory experience preferred. Business management and experience working in a research setting strongly preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: ALAT/LAT preferred. Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be able to perform laboratory procedures, which require talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (Personal Protective Equipment) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to consistently lift and move at least 50 pounds.
- Animal facility and laboratories with moderate noise possible.
- Working with potentially hazardous/noxious devices (e.g., needles, scalpel blades etc.) and chemicals (e.g., anesthetic gases, formalin, alcohols, xylenes, etc.), animal odors and/or radiation.
- General office working conditions.
- This position will require performing duties on weekends and/or holidays.
