Overview

The Energy Systems Group is part of the Homeland Protection Division and focuses on assisting the Department of Homeland Security in securing the nation from energy‑related threats. The group works on a wide variety of programs including domestic and tactical military base energy resilience, microgrids, cybersecurity of control systems that interface with energy systems, and development of advanced energy technologies. Projects are typically conducted in a small team environment, leveraging expertise from within Lincoln Laboratory and the MIT campus.

Responsibilities
  • Energy systems modeling, data analysis, algorithm development, hardware prototyping, and supporting demonstration, testing and evaluation activities.
  • Develop and implement leading‑edge techniques for processing and analysis of varied data sets, and develop new concepts, designs and systems as program needs dictate.
  • Communicate effectively with an experienced and interdisciplinary team.
Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or B.S./B.A. with 3 years of direct experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field with a strong background in physical sciences.
  • Experience in power systems and/or power electronics.
  • Experience with one or more power modeling tools (OpenDSS, SKM, ETAP, PSCAD, Typhoon‑HIL Easy Power, Spice, etc.).
  • Proficiency in a high‑level programming language such as Python, MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Hands‑on lab experience with hardware: high‑power measurement and data collection, circuit design, PCB layout/rework, soldering, and use of test equipment (electronic loads, power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5.
Desired Skills
  • Experience in power circuit modeling, power converter design and controls, battery selection, system integration, and testing.
  • Experience with real‑time simulations of inverter‑based resources (BESS, PV) within microgrids.
Salary

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $116,400 - $140,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $116,400 - $182,200
