Job DescriptionThe Fabrication Engineering Group provides rapid fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of advanced hardware prototypes for national security applications. The group focuses on precision machining, additive manufacturing, and 5‑axis machining of high‑complexity parts, alongside advanced PCB manufacturing capabilities and integration testing. The technician plays a critical role in the fabrication of prototype systems, assembling electrical subcomponents, operating technical equipment, and working independently under the supervision of scientific personnel.
Responsibilities- Mechanical/electrical assembly of printed circuit board assemblies
- Assist higher‑level technicians in assembling chassis, cable, and PCB assemblies
- Build wire harnesses of all configurations
- Solder and de‑solder through‑hole and SMT components
- Cut, strip, crimp, solder, and terminate wires and connectors with precision
- Light to moderate lifting with a maximum of 25 lbs
- Fiber splicing
- Graduation from a two‑year technical school or its equivalent
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Recognized self‑motivator who seeks continuous learning and challenge
- Computer literacy, proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
- Passion for fabricating complex parts that enable program teams to develop prototype systems demonstrating national‑level technology
- Knowledge of electronic color code
- Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, and mechanical drawings (preferred but not required)
- Must pass required in‑house training certifications
- A desire to develop advanced fabrication skills such as wire bonding, flip‑chip technologies, direct die attach, selective soldering, and fiber splicing
- General knowledge of electronics, including mechanical and electrical assembly of printed circuit board assemblies and wire bonding
- Minimum of three years’ experience in PCB assembly, rework, and repair, with proficiency in soldering and handling electronic components
MIT Lincoln Laboratory provides a typical hiring range as a good faith estimate of what we reasonably expect to offer for this position at the time of posting. The final salary offered to a selected candidate will depend on various factors, including—but not limited to—the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate’s experience, skills and education/training, internal equity considerations and applicable legal requirements.
This range reflects base salary only and does not include additional forms of compensation or benefits.
