Chemist: Sensing Materials & Threat Detection

Job Summary

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is seeking a Chemist to join the Biological and Chemical Technologies Group in Lexington, MA. The group works on advanced biological and chemical technologies including molecular biology, synthetic biology, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, microfluidics, mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, and organic chemistry. Projects include chemical and protein sensing materials, bio-manufactured material analysis, threat chemical detection, and synthesis and formulation of small molecules and polymers.

• Develop sensing materials for detecting chemicals and proteins.
• Support analysis and downstream processing of bio-manufactured materials.
• Perform trace detection of threat chemicals.
• Synthesize and formulate small molecules and polymers.
• Conduct chemical synthesis, analysis, and isolation.
• Communicate results orally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences.

• MS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent; or BS/BA with at least five years of experience.
• Experience in synthesis and characterization of organic and/or inorganic materials.
• Experience with preparation and characterization of polymers (desired).
• Familiarity with NMR, mass spectrometry, MS/MS, infrared spectroscopy, gas/liquid chromatography.
• Experience with chemical separations and isolation (e.g., liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, recrystallization).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to describe technical results to non-technical audiences.

• Experienced: $116,400 - $182,200

MIT Lincoln Laboratory provides a typical hiring range as a good faith estimate of what we reasonably expect to offer for this position at the time of posting. The final salary offered to a selected candidate will depend on various factors, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate's experience, skills and education/training, internal equity considerations and applicable legal requirements.
