Electrician – Lead Technician - Class 32

To maintain a safe, comfortable and functional environment in all town and school buildings in a cost effective, customer-oriented manner that helps the town fulfill its mission of service to its residents and protects the capital investment made by the town in public facilities.

Maintenance functions include routine and emergency repairs and scheduled preventive services for all building systems, weekend building checks, and on call services.

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Maintain a safe driving record
  • Eight (8) years of experience in the electrical trade.
  • Possess a current Massachusetts Masters Electrician License.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal record check (CORI), Sexual Offender Registry (SORI), SAFIS finger printing and a pre-placement medical exam with drug screening.
  • Thorough knowledge of all codes pertaining to the maintenance and installation of electrical systems.
  • Proficient in the diagnosis and repair of fire protection, security systems and phone systems
  • Expertise with electrical circuits, transformers, fuses, motors, relays, magnetic starters, switches, grounds, shorts, faults, voltmeters, and other test equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a wide variety of skilled electrical tasks using hand or power tools, and related equipment to maintain buildings and equipment as detailed in the performance responsibilities listed below.
  • Possess basic computer skills, including ability to perform simple word processing and send/receive email and ability to access internet programs, or willingness and ability to be trained on such items.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.

Must possess the ability to:

  • Maintain continuous education credits and valid state licensures
  • Perform a wide variety of skilled journey-level electrical work in the maintenance and repair of Town facilities and equipment.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, sketches, plans and specifications
  • Prioritize, schedule, assign and review work.
  • Interpret, explain and apply codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.
  • Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the electrical trade.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Estimate labor and material cost for specific projects.
  • Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Meet schedules and time lines
  • Maintain routine records.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices
  • Use and operation of Computer and/or electronic devices to maintain assigned work
  • Safe operation of Town vehicles.
  • Primary Performance Responsibilities:

  • Training and Oversight of Apprentices. Management of Apprenticeship Program
  • Training of personnel on trade specific building operations
  • Project Management
  • Contractor coordination and oversight
  • Pulls electrical permits when necessary
  • Wire new areas.
  • Replace or repair switches, ballast, lamps, and motors, etc.
  • Maintain, on a regular schedule, all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring preventive maintenance services.
  • Respond to Emergency situations when called upon by a Department Supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable building, fire, health, safety, electrical, and any other applicable codes and standards.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and perform corrective maintenance in a timely fashion.
  • Identifies and corrects health and safety issues in a time efficient manner.
  • Director of Public Facilities or Designee with the review of construction documents for both new and renovation projects.
  • Assists in the development of the building preventive maintenance plan.
  • Assist with the ongoing updating and implementation of planned preventive maintenance.
  • Performs corrective action and preventive maintenance regarding building systems.
