Dawson Public Power District will be accepting applications for the position of GIS Specialist / Administrator out of the Lexington Headquarters.
The GIS Specialist helps maintain the organization’s GIS and other mapping. This entry level position supports GIS database and other database management, creating maps and reports used daily in operations. The GIS Specialist also maintains electrical system construction specifications and drawings.
The GIS Administrator oversees the organization's GIS, ensuring data accuracy, system reliability, etc. This position includes advanced data analysis to support decision-making. The GIS Administrator will also assist in the budgeting process for the Engineering Department.

SUMMARYThe GIS Specialist supports the organization’s Geographic Information System (GIS) by helping maintain data accuracy, system functionality, and integration with other business systems. This entry-level role assists with managing GIS databases, performing basic spatial analysis, and creating maps, reports, and visualizations that support day-to-day operations and decision-making across departments. The GIS Specialist works closely with team members to ensure GIS data is reliable, up to date, and accessible.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEssential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Within the limits of approved board policies, operating guides and procedures, assumes responsibility and has commensurate authority for the following activities:
- Assist with the administration and maintenance of the GIS platform, including databases, servers, and related software, under guidance from senior staff.
- Support the collection, integration, and updating of spatial and non-spatial data from internal teams (engineering, operations) and external sources.
- Help maintain GIS data standards, documentation, and metadata to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Perform basic spatial and data analysis to support planning, design, and maintenance activities related to the electric distribution system.
- Create and update maps, dashboards, spreadsheets, and reports to support technical analysis and daily operations.
- Assist with drafting and maintaining construction specifications and related documentation as directed by Engineering and Operations staff.
- Support the creation and revision of specialized drawings in CAD format as needed.
- Work with IT and other departments to support integration between GIS and enterprise systems (e.g., SCADA, outage management, asset management).
- Troubleshoot basic GIS issues and elevate more complex technical problems to senior staff or vendors.
- Prepare GIS data, maps, reports, and visualizations for internal stakeholders to support operational decision‑making.
- Provide basic support and guidance to staff using GIS tools and reports.
- Maintain positive working relationships with internal teams and external partners to support information sharing.
- Prepare routine correspondence, reports, and presentation materials for department staff and management.
- Assist IT with GIS‑related data security, backup, and recovery activities.
- Respond to customer and stakeholder inquiries by resolving routine issues or routing requests to appropriate personnel.
