What you'll do on a typical day

The Student Success Advisor provides academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to low-income, first generation and/or academically disadvantaged high school students that supports completion of a secondary school diploma, as well as enrolling and completing a postsecondary credential. This is a part-time, 12-month position funded by a five-year U.S. Department of Education grant. The majority of the time will be spent working independently on-site at Central Davidson, West Davidson, and/or East Davidson High School.

The position reports to the Director, Upward Bound, and has the following responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

Collaborates with Director, school administrators, teachers, and counselors to identify participants and implement a program improving persistence, graduation, and college enrollment

Coordinates recruitment, accepts referrals, and selects Upward Bound participants

Presents program benefits to students, parents, and school personnel

Advises students using a student-centered approach to promote academic success and college readiness

Manages a caseload of 30-60 students; conducts needs assessments and develops individualized College, Career, and Academic Plans (CCAPs)

Meets with students and families to address academic and personal barriers

Coordinates tutoring referrals and develops study skills workshops

Monitors attendance and disciplinary records for eligibility and intervention needs

Mentors students to build confidence and envision postsecondary success

Develops student assessments and completes program evaluations

Partners with colleges and community organizations for workshops and programming

Plans and leads college visits, enrichment activities, and cultural events

Assists students and families with college readiness tasks (ACT/SAT, financial aid, applications, etc.)

Participates in team meetings to align goals and resolve implementation challenges

Maintains confidential student records and submits required reports

Engages in professional development and TRIO training opportunities

Promotes a respectful, inclusive environment for diverse populations

Performs other duties supporting the College's mission, vision, and values

Your attributes

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education, administration, counseling or a related field

2 years of experience counseling/advising youth

Ability to work independently with limited oversight

Experience working with low-income, first-generation, and/or at risk students

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution in education, administration, counseling or a related field

Experience working with federal Department of Education programs or TRIO Programs

Work experience in a college setting

Experience with Blumen database systems

Personally overcome obstacles similar to those experienced by Upward Bound program participants

Fluency in Spanish

Work environment

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment; ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus and College locations; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.
