Job SummaryAn employee in this class performs any combination of classroom duties to assist teaching staff. The employee must follow general instructions, adapt to frequent changes, and provide guidance and coaching to students. The role includes operating various media and technology equipment such as computers, projectors, and audio/visual devices. The employee may be exposed to human blood and body fluids and is subject to OSHA blood‑borne pathogen requirements.
Duties are performed inside and outside the school, often requiring a CDL license to drive a school bus. Work is supervised by the classroom teacher and evaluated through observation and performance quality.
- Discusses assigned duties with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Performs duties in the principal's office, classrooms, guidance office, media center, computer labs, or other special areas.
- Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids.
- Supervises groups in the cafeteria, library, playground, restrooms, and other areas.
- Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods as directed by the teacher.
- Operates learning aids and technological equipment including computers.
- Assists others in using computer programs.
- Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments to reinforce learning.
- Prepares, administers, grades student assignments, and assists with filing of student records and work.
- Assists teacher in preparing reports and materials.
- Confers with parents on student progress.
- Maintains cleanliness and general upkeep of the classroom.
- Assists other staff in the department as requested.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Drives a school bus when required.
- Graduation from high school.
- Three to six months of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of basic needs and developmental stages of children.
- Knowledge of typical behavioral patterns and issues with children.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to perform simple arithmetic.
- Ability to operate various media and technology equipment such as computer, television, VCR, cassette player, overhead projector, laminator, copy machine, and other office equipment.
- Ability to present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group settings.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees, and the general public.
- Required to obtain a CDL and bus license.
- Required to serve as a substitute bus driver and/or regular bus route driver.
Must be able to stand and walk regularly, and sometimes stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects. Must be able to obtain a CDL to drive a school bus.
