Job Description & How to Apply Below
Power Electronics Engineer
The Power Electronics Engineer designs, develops, and implements complex multi-phase high voltage systems, with a focus on 480V power electronics for industrial and motorsports applications. This role combines hands-on work with wiring, installation, and optimization of electrical systems with the engineering of advanced control strategies, data acquisition, and system integration. Initially, the primary focus will be on continued development of reformer and reactor skid systems and sub-systems, followed by projects related to motorsports, including ECU development, starters, alternators, sensors, and related mechatronic devices.
Responsibilities
- Engineer, design, and implement high voltage, multi-phase power electronics systems, including 480V systems up to 400 amps.
- Oversee manufacturing, sourcing, installation, and development of complex high voltage systems, including wiring design and installation, variable frequency drives, generator sets, load banks, industrial process controllers, and switching gear.
- Design and optimize microgrid power management systems involving generators and motors, including transitions between shore power supplies.
- Perform hands-on installation, wiring, and electrical hardware setup, including troubleshooting and resolving system issues.
- Develop and implement instrumentation, control, and calibration strategies, including CAN communication, harness design and manufacturing, and power electronics synchronization.
- Lead and contribute to the development of reformer and reactor skid systems and sub-systems, ensuring reliable and efficient operation.
- Support motorsports-related projects such as ECU development, starters, alternators, sensors, and other race engine mechatronic devices.
- Contribute to, lead, and manage electronics or mechatronic projects involving controls, electrical engineering, and related technologies from concept through production.
- Consult on facility-related issues involving power electronics and electrical systems on an as-needed basis.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, wiring and harness diagrams, test plans, and technical reports.
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and knowledge sharing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electronics and controls into larger mechanical and process systems.
- Use data acquisition tools to collect, analyze, and interpret performance data, and apply findings to improve system design and operation.
- Stay current with industry trends, standards, and advancements in power electronics, controls, and mechatronics, and incorporate new technologies into designs.
- Work enthusiastically on novel, complex engineering projects with minimal oversight, demonstrating initiative and ownership.
- Demonstrate leadership in team settings, actively participating in project planning, reviews, and problem-solving activities.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of high voltage, multi-phase power electronics systems.
- Professional experience engineering 480V systems up to approximately 400 amps, including microgrid power management with generators and motors and transitions between shore power sources.
- Hands-on experience with wiring and electrical system hardware installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Strong proficiency with instrumentation, control, and calibration, including CAN communication protocols, harness design and manufacturing, and power electronics synchronization strategies.
- Demonstrated experience with data acquisition and analysis for electrical and control systems.
- Ability to contribute to and lead electronics or mechatronic projects from early design through prototyping, testing, and production (cradle-to-grave experience).
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to quickly learn new technologies and tackle new engineering challenges with minimal oversight.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in team environments and participating in collaborative engineering efforts.
- Approximately 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in power electronics, high voltage systems, or closely related fields.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline is highly preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with combustion engine controls such as electronic fuel injection (EFI).
- Hands-on experience with engine mechatronics devices including starters, alternators, and sensors.
- Experience with custom controller development using platforms such as Arduinos or similar embedded control systems.
- Background in power electronics design and optimization for industrial or transportation applications.
- Experience with engine testing and familiarity…
