Position and ReportingPosition Title: One to One Assistant, Special Education
Department: Instructional Services
Reports To: Principal
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
REQUIREDEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate or equivalent
- At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or
- An associate's degree (or higher); or
- A passing score on the Para Pro or Para Pathways Assessment
Must have current government issued identification
Employment terms are based on full-time work during the school year; conditions may be adjusted for part-time employment or employment for less than a full school year.
GENERAL SUMMARYUnder close supervision of a certified teacher, works with individuals or a small group of students identified as disabled under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) to provide physical, emotional and academic support for them to gain maximum benefit from special education programs. Assists teachers with various classroom activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Upholds the mission, vision and goals of Lexington County School District One to improve student outcomes.
- Interacts, communicates and collaborates effectively with all stakeholders.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment.
- Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
- Participates in professional meetings and training sessions as required.
- Maintains materials for daily responsibilities and ensures safe storage and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Assists with implementation of IEP goals and objectives; prepares materials for instructional purposes.
- Assists with academic instruction and classroom activities; keeps students on task and compliant with rules.
- Implements behavior intervention plans (BIP) under teacher direction.
- Assists with personal hygiene and daily living skills as applicable.
- Communicates daily with the lead certified teacher regarding student progress.
- Manages and responds to student behavioral needs; uses visuals to support programming as needed.
- Follows behavior interventions and instructions from the lead teacher.
- Performs record-keeping duties (e.g., restroom usage, diet, behavior charts).
- Assists in data collection under teacher supervision.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to student needs and learning styles; responds accordingly.
- Monitors and assists with assistive devices and health-related apparatus as needed.
- Provides basic first aid and supports health programs (therapy, adaptive physical education, etc.).
- Supports related services (speech, vision, etc.) and augmentative communication devices.
- Assists with computer assistive technology and instructional technology.
- Participates in IEP meetings as appropriate and communicates with parents under teacher direction.
- Assists with transitional services, including job and community training if applicable.
- Maintains clean instructional areas and performs simple tasks for students (e.g., sharpening pencils, distributing meals).
- Uses computing devices and software for information management and communication where applicable.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supports students and their needs; follows behavior intervention plans and implements behavior management strategies.
OTHERSKILLS and ABILITIES
Ability to operate with awareness of district policies and board policies. Must have reliable transportation. Knowledge of district policies and operations; ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively with students, staff and the public. Proficient in word processing, email, spreadsheets, file management, internet use, and presenting reports. Ability to organize a flexible schedule to meet deadlines and to work independently and with teams.
PHYSICALDEMANDS
Physical demands include activities typical of classroom work and lifting/moving students up to 75 pounds. Occasionally push/pull items like furniture or materials. Regularly sit, stand, walk, talk, listen; may require near and distance vision. May require extended hours. Frequent use of computer monitor and related equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENTPrimarily in a classroom setting with possible exposure to contagious conditions or behavioral challenges. May require use of adaptive equipment. Occasional travel; no overnight travel required.…
