QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must meet all requirements outlined in South Carolina State Board of Education Regulation 43-243.2
    • Beginning 2028 - Associate's Degree/beginning 2034 - Bachelor's Degree
    • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) rating of 3.5 (2026/27), 3.7 (2030/31), 4.0 (2033/34) OR documentation of national certification as defined by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf); and,
    • Documentation of valid, successful completion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment:
      Written Test (EIPA: WT)
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must have current government issued identification

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

GENERAL

SUMMARY:

Educational interpreters are Related Service Providers under the IDEA. They provide language access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in the classroom. As RSPs, Educational Interpreters foster language between students and all members of the school community to ensure equitable access to instruction and school related activities. Educational interpreters apply best practices and professional standards to support students' language development, learning, and participation in the educational setting and beyond.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One towards increased outcomes for students.
  • Facilitates communication for deaf or hard-of-hearing students by interpreting classroom instruction, peer discussions, and school activities into sign language or another visual code.
  • Help students access the curriculum and ensure a supportive, accessible learning environment both in and out of the classroom.
  • Communicates using language appropriate for the child and clarifies aspects of the child's surroundings (i.e. routines, rules, and concepts).
  • Tutors one‑on‑one and/or other tasks specific to the given environment.
  • Interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
  • Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
  • Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities and essential functions; provides for safe storage and proper use of all tools, equipment and materials
  • Effectively uses personal technology devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication.
  • Participates as part of the instructional team; interprets directions and assists in providing continuity of instruction to students as identified and directed by their IEP.
  • Participates in the IEP meeting as part of the team and ensures that interpreting is provided by another interpreter for communication as needed.

Currently not applicable. This could change at the discretion of the Director of Special Education.

OTHER

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation.

Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e‑mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software.
