DescriptionThe Department of Earth and Environmental Geosciences at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA invites applications for two one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Geoscience positions, beginning July 1, 2026. We are looking for dynamic, creative teacher/scholars, dedicated to effective teaching and collaboration with undergraduates. Each position carries a 6-course teaching load distributed over Fall and Winter terms (12 weeks each), and the university's signature 4-week Spring Term.
The position is open to candidates with expertise in any area of geoscience. Courses taught will include Introductory Physical or Environmental Geology and additional general education courses in topics related to the candidate's expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates who can take advantage of our rich geologic setting.
Washington and Lee University is a highly selective, independent, co‑educational, liberal arts college of approximately 1900 undergraduate and 400 law students and located in Lexington, VA, three hours southwest of Washington, DC. W&L is consistently ranked among the top national liberal arts colleges. The Earth and Environmental Geoscience Department has excellent analytical facilities and resources, makes great use of the Appalachians in field courses and labs, and is a member of the Keck Geology Consortium.

QualificationsPreferred candidates will hold a Ph.D. or have ABD status in Earth or Environmental Geoscience or adjacent fields.
