Assistant Principal – Elementary School

Position Type: Full-Time

Overview

The Elementary Assistant Principal works directly with the Principal to supervise instruction and curriculum development and functions as building manager, instructional leader, school climate leader, staff developer, and school/community relations specialist.

Education Required

Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.

Must possess or be eligible for a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administration/Supervision K‑12.

Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of elementary and special education principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching and administration methods.
  • Knowledge of school division rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Leadership qualities and personal integrity as certified by the Division Superintendent of Schools.
  • Good moral character.
Essential Duties
  • Organize, administer, and supervise the instructional program.
  • Use data for decision‑making and conduct studies or research as directed.
  • Develop and implement a school improvement plan to increase student learning.
  • Coordinate community and staff in the preparation and implementation of an annual school plan.
  • Plan, implement, and assess instructional programs that enhance teaching and student achievement of the Standards of Learning.
  • Develop fiscal and resource allocation plans.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and manage funds collected.
  • Communicate a clear vision of continuous improvement.
  • Ensure staff design coherent instruction and plan for desired objectives aligned with Standards of Learning and curriculum guidelines.
  • Supervise the alignment, coordination, and delivery of assigned programs.
  • Evaluate staff in compliance with board policies.
  • Observe classrooms to assess instructional methods, materials, and procedures.
  • Recruit, induct, support, evaluate, and retain quality personnel.
  • Provide staff development programs.
  • Analyze problems and apply problem‑solving techniques.
  • Coordinate daily operations and manage human, material, and financial resources.
  • Interpret school board, state board, and Virginia law regulations to staff.
  • Promote effective communication and interpersonal relations with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Model professional, moral, and ethical standards and personal integrity.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance student learning.
  • Advise teachers on instruction, classroom management, and discipline.
  • Implement a discipline policy fostering a safe, positive environment.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of students.
  • Maintain rapport with all stakeholders and motivate for maximum potential.
  • Protect instructional time and ensure materials support learning.
  • Encourage staff to pursue professional growth.
  • Maintain sensitivity to staff issues and create an effective learning environment.
  • Assign staff duties for efficient school operation.
  • Oversee accurate recordkeeping and security of student records.
  • Maintain building and grounds; report repairs.
  • Coordinate planning and implementation of school budget.
  • Prepare special events and communications for community engagement.
  • Respond to parent and community needs.
  • Review building use requests according to policy.
  • Supervise students during school day and related activities.
  • Administer school rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate athletic and extracurricular schedules.
  • Recognize student achievements and develop communications.
  • Maintain committee participation as directed.
  • Ensure safety of students, staff, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain school handbook of policies and procedures.
  • Comply with and support school and division regulations.
  • Communicate with counselors and resource officers.
  • Maintain licensure and update professional skills.
  • Demonstrate non‑discriminatory practices.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
