Job Title:
English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor
Reports To:
Adult Education Lead Teacher
Under general supervision, provides standards-based instruction to adult English language learners (17 years and older) to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. Prepares students for successful participation in workforce, postsecondary education, and civic life. Instruction is delivered in a multi-level, multicultural classroom using data-driven and differentiated instructional practices aligned to state ESL and College and Career Readiness standards.
CoreResponsibilities
- Provides instruction in English language acquisition, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
- Plans and delivers standards-based lessons aligned to ESL and College and Career Readiness standards
- Develops and implements individualized learning plans based on student assessment data
- Interpret approved ESL assessments to determine placement and monitor student progress
- Utilizes a variety of instructional methods, including direct instruction, differentiated instruction, digital learning, and contextualized teaching strategies
- Manages a multi-level, multicultural classroom to meet diverse language and educational needs
- Integrates civics, citizenship, and digital literacy into instruction
- Maintains accurate and timely records of attendance, performance, and measurable skill gains
- Establishes and maintains a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement, persistence, and retention
- Collaborates with program staff, community agencies, and partners to support student success
- Participates in professional development, staff meetings, and program improvement activities
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local ESL program requirements
Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Training and Experience- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Valid South Carolina teaching certification (preferred)
- ESOL/TESOL endorsement or certification (preferred)
Experience working with English language learners or diverse populations
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Skill in delivering differentiated instruction in a multi-level, multicultural setting
- Ability to effectively engage and support adult English language learners
- Proficiency in instructional technology and digital learning platforms
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community partners
Special Requirements: Position may be grant-funded and contingent upon enrollment and funding availability.
Terms of Employment: Based on the Lexington 4 Adult Education Staff Salary Schedule;
Part Time - Between 12-15 Hours per Week (Monday-Wednesday 7:30 AM - 12:00 PM).
Physical Demands: Work is performed in a classroom or instructional setting. Requires standing, walking, and light lifting. Must be able to operate standard office and instructional technology equipment.
