ResponsibilitiesProtect public health by ensuring that public drinking water complies with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and Waterworks Regulations. This is accomplished through surveillance, sanitary surveys, reviewing operating reports, investigating consumer complaints, preparing notices of alleged violation, initiating enforcement actions, managing databases, reviewing bacteriological and chemical analyses, and providing technical assistance and training to waterworks owners/operators.
Provides support to the Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor and may include assigned areas in one or more planning districts. Serves as the non‑community waterworks and found water system programs subject‑matter expert for the entire field office, by providing technical and procedural guidance and quality assurance reviews.
Join the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Drinking Water and contribute to protecting public health across the Blue Ridge region. This position is responsible for conducting waterworks surveillance to ensure public water systems comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act and Virginia Department of Health regulations. The role supports Virginia’s EPA primacy by assisting with regulatory compliance, providing guidance to waterworks operators, and helping the Commonwealth maintain eligibility for federal funding.
This position is well‑suited for an individual who enjoys fieldwork, problem‑solving, and working independently while collaborating with a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring the safe treatment and delivery of drinking water for communities throughout the Commonwealth.
Minimum Qualifications- Working knowledge of biology, microbiology, chemistry, and math
- Working knowledge of technology associated with provision of drinking water
- Ability to use computers for word processing and data management
- Ability to communicate in English in writing, orally, interpersonally, and before groups and public meetings
- Ability to interpret regulations and technical documents
- Experience leading a project or team
- Experience conducting sanitary surveys or environmental risk assessments
- Knowledge of SDWA and Virginia Waterworks Regulations
- Ability to manage a regulatory program
- Licensure as a Class 3, 2, or 1 Waterworks Operator by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation
