The Rockbridge Area Regional Jail Commission is accepting applications for the position of Jail Superintendent. The Regional Jail serves the Cities of Lexington and Buena Vista and the County of Rockbridge and the towns within. The jail is located at 258 Greenhouse Road Lexington, Virginia. The region is centrally located in the historic and scenic Shenandoah Valley. The community is rural/suburban with a high quality of life.

Excellent medical, recreation and public schools are abundant in the region.

The Jail typically holds approximately 130 inmates. The Superintendent provides leadership and supervision to approximately 46 sworn officers and 2 civilian personnel. They will also oversee the contractual medical and food services. The Superintendent is a direct report to the Regional Jail Commission, and he/she is responsible for preparing and managing the Jail’s estimated $6.6 million-dollar operating budget.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in corrections, criminal justice, public administration, law enforcement or a related field; progressively responsible experience in jail management, including a minimum of five years in a senior leadership capacity at the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent level in a comparably-sized facility; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The preferred candidate should be familiar with Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections accreditation process, NCCHC Accreditation process, and the Commonwealth of Virginia Compensation Board.

Applicants must possess knowledge and abilities in administrative and personnel management; budget development and management; and computer usage. Effective oral and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential.

Salary range for the position is $138,000 - $168,000. Salary for this position is negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package. Note, there is a maximum starting salary of $150,000. All communications are treated confidentially unless otherwise required by law.
